I am the luckiest person on earth to have been randomly assigned this young doctor 35 years ago for a physical and to have been his patient ever since. I have never doubted his professional competence but now comes his astute and extremely rare manifestation of his competence in the art of being human in these most challenging times.
Wow. This was fantastic. Too much to unpack at once. But here are a few quick thoughts/comments. I was introduced to Dylan by your father too - at a very high volume in Brewster. More to come very soon. CI.
Now I am stuck with this song and it’d remind me of Dr. Cifu:
‘Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin'
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your handFor the times they are a-changin'
There’s a lot to unpack. Its interesting your father’s response to the NoDoz boxes did not betray these verses. This I find can be applicable in leadership—always give people chances in a piece of puzzle you can’t understand.
Ok NOW I understand a bit more as to why I’ve been a fan! You are the kind of music lover that I am, except that was my first love and career before healthcare. I assert you landed where you were supposed to but man, music is exactly the same for me. The soundtracks of our lives is woven with song.
As a child of the 90s whose older brother was a child of the 80s, I had a breadth of musical influence. Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning” and “Master of Puppets” were absorbed by my elementary-school ears (for better or worse). I’m one of the minority who will (proudly and publicly) say the Pumpkin’s “Gish” was a far better release than Nirvana’s “Nevermind”. BUT, it was the initial beats of Bonham’s drumming in Stairway that flipped a switch in me. Riding around in my friend’s Bronco in the summer of 97, those drums…that solo…I was immediately taken with the notion that life could be found in *good* music.
This is a great trip down memory lane!! My first concert was also Dylan with your father - After the Flood at MSG- and suffice to say it was life changing!
I also deeply associate Joan Baez with your mother - Diamonds and Rust in particular.
Now I need to go back and listen to Gimme Some Neck!
Random…I remember AC and I went to see the Police at MSG in 1981. It was the Ghosts in the Machine tour; 10th row tickets. Incredible show. Did we see the Stones the following year in Philly?
A few more bits from the road…. Adam played Queen’s then new album News of the World from start to finish with me. High school. First time I heard it. It was thrilling. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker who also produced Gimmie Some Neck!

Excellent musical references!
Curious to hear the playlist
P.S. - If anyone out there for any unknown reason wanted to hear portuguese pop / punk / rock music, check this playlist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0ynx3WB6335ir8znz5kjru?si=FXs_n2MFRdWIhwLUV5ZJSA&pi=nzrntyD0TW23r. I always like to promote good portuguese music :)
Love it. Thanks so much!
Your comment made me think of my Portugese speaking friend who I passed this on to. I saw her a week ago, but it was nice to think of her.

Yes, George Thorogood, Journey, and the Stones.
